Information about Huercal-Overa, Almeria
The home of the Spanish Property Choice Huercal-Overa office
Huércal-Overa is both where Shaun lives and where we opened our 4th office in November 2018 featured on series 3 of Channel 4 Sun Sea and Selling Houses. The office is located right on the main island as you enter Huercal Overa by the main bus station.
Huércal-Overa is classed as the main town of Levante Almeriense which covers a total of 318km². The town is on the just off the main A7/E15 motorway, which connects the East & South of Spain, meaning the town benefits from a large footfall of visitors and traders from all over the country and is on the border of Murcia.
The local beaches are in easy reach with San Juan de los Terreros only being a short 25 minutes drive away and the well known white washed coastal village of Mojacar where the Spanish Property Choice head office is located is only a 35 minute drive. You also have the beaches of Vera Playa and the lovely harbour of Garrucha within a similar driving distance.
Huércal-Overa is very well known for its desert like landscape, surrounded by mountains and forever changing views. The main income to the town is its agricultural industry, which surround the town with Olive farms, fruit trees and vegetable fields.
Huércal-Overa has one of the largest and most popular weekly markets within the area. Just a short stroll from the Spanish Property Choice offices on a monday morning the streets become a hive of activity with stall holders and the locals buying all kinds of products from household goods, fresh fruit and veg, clothes and much more. You can get pretty much anything you need from this market and town in general.
You can pick up a real bargain!
The town is vibrant all year round with lots happening, such as the annual 5 day Feria which fills the air with live music, fun large fair and needless to say lots of delicious food! The Ferria's are a great way for you to get to meet the locals and experience a true slice of Spain.
One of our favourite places to visit as a family is the Huércal-Overa are the Adolfo Suarez public gardens & zoo which is located in the centre of the town, the same street as the market.
It covers a huge area of 19,000m² and has a great children’s play area with slides, swings and climbing frames. There is also an outdoor fitness area where you will see people of all ages limbering up in the cool of the day. There is lots of bird life, peacocks walk freely, duck ponds, gardens, cafeteria and it has a variety of wildlife and animals. It is shaded beautifully by pine trees, so its a very nice area to sit and relax and watch the world go by surrounded by nature.
The park was featured on series 1 of Channel 4 Sun Sea and Selling Houses when Sharon and Steve spent a day there with their grandchildren as part of a family story. You can use catch up if you would like to see what we got up to by visiting the Channel 4 website where all episodes are available.
There are some great places to eat in and around the town, including some places serving very traditional local dishes such as Migas and fresh gazpacho during the summer. There are long lists of restaurants worth a visit including Crisbe, Las Vegas, La Morena, Las Tinajas, El Mirador and Las Cañas. Look out for Shaun if you do visit as he frequents these establishments on a regular basis.
The town also has a great indoor swimming pool and gymnasium. They hold many events including badminton tournaments and karate classes.
There is also an amazing large outdoor communal swimming pool within a short walk. Next door are the primary and secondary schools that have a very good reputation with local Spanish and expat families who have moved into the area. Huércal-Overa also boasts a full size cinema, theatre and many more options for the whole family.
If you visit then don't forget to pop in and say hi to the Spanish Property Choice team and The Garner family. A true warm welcome awaits.
